5 Mistakes to Avoid When Holidaying in Thailand

(Last Updated On: )

The Land of Smiles is one of the most visited nations on the planet and for good reason; this enchanting land has much to offer the tourist and if you are planning a visit soon, here are a few mistakes to avoid.

1. Overstaying your visa

Some people mistakenly think that a few days overstay isn’t a problem, which is true if you manage to get to the airport, you simply pay the 500 baht a day fine and you are on your way; however, should an immigration or police officer request to see your visa and it has expired, you will be locked up, fined and then deported, with a 1-year ban as the icing on the cake. If you think your visa will run out before you leave, go to a local immigration office and get an extension, which costs 1,900 baht.

2. Sunburn

If you have fair skin and arrive from a cold European country, you risk getting sunburn, which would effectively ruin your holiday. Always apply sunscreen before heading to the beach, especially the first few days. The cool breeze at the beach can make you forget about the sun, so be on your guard. If you are staying at a top hotel Patong Beach, you can buy sunscreen at the reception.

3. Driving without a licence –

Renting a motorcycle is risky, even more so if you don’t hold a valid licence; sadly, many tourists end up in hospital after coming off a bike and if your travel insurance doesn’t cover you, you might be in hot water! Also, it is worth noting that is you have no insurance and you cause damage/injury, you might end up with a huge bill. You can obtain an International Driving Permit, which would cover you for driving a car and motorcycle.

4. No health insurance

Don’t think bad things happen to others or take your good health for granted; should the worst happen and you need hospital treatment, it could wipe out your savings. Search online and take out a package that suits your lifestyle; a secure online payment activates your policy. Click here for the best temples in Thailand.

5. Bringing too much stuff

The best way to prepare is bring minimum beach clothing, as you can buy good quality clothing in Thailand and packing light allows you to buy lots of souvenirs for family and friends. Put everything you intend to pack on a bed and consider every item and you should be fine.

We hope that your holiday in Thailand is perfect and most tourists return next year, as they love this amazing land. If you do some research online, you can prepare for your holiday and we feel sure that this won’t be the last time you come to the Land of Smiles.
